DOMINOES NET CASH -Mar 05 (East Manchester Advertiser)
An east Manchester junior netball club is now £2,000 better off thanks to the support of family bakers Warburtons and Sportsmatch. Warburtons in Shaw, Oldham had pledged £1,000 to the club to help with funding after the soaring cost of courts and coaching put the club’s future in the balance.
This funding meant that Dominoes were able to apply for, and receive an additional £1,000 of funding from Sportsmatch, the Government’s grass roots sports sponsorship incentive scheme. And it was even more good news for Dominoes when they were named an associate of City in the Community at Manchester City Football Club.
One of the many roles of City in the Community is to encourage young people in Manchester to participate in sporting activities – and now netball is an option thanks to the links established with Dominoes.
To mark their recent success, young members and coaches from the Dominoes Junior Netball Team were presented with cheques by Warburtons John Lord and Sportsmatch director Mike Reynolds. These were presented on the pitch before the recent Manchester City and Newcastle United game.
Dominoes coach Yvonne Coldrick said: ‘Without the funding from Warburtons we could not have applied for the Sportsmatch funding. We are very grateful because the future of our club is now secure and we are now looking forward to hosting our first junior netball tournament in April. ‘We are also very proud to have been named an associate of City in the Community and are looking forward to working with them to encourage more young people to take part in the sport.’

The future of a struggling East Manchester Junior netball club is now secure after family bakers Warburtons came to the rescue.
Belle Vue-based Dominoes Junior Netball club appealed to Warburtons to help with funding after the soaring cost of courts and coaching put the club’s future in the balance. “Rather than raise the subs we thought a company like Warburtons who promote healthy active lifestyles might be able to help us and they’ve more than lived up to our expectations, ” said coach Yvonne Coldrick.
The family bakers have agreed to sponsor Dominoes to the tune of £1,000. Jim Stott, sales manager at Warburtons Pennine bakery said: “We are happy to invest in projects that promote the health of young people in East Manchester.” “The club has already shown its worth in running successful annual netball tournaments at the Velodrome which we already sponsor and which attracts teams from all over the UK” he added. Dominoes, which was set up in 2003, want to keep the club affordable for youngsters in east Manchester.
But the cost of the courts and the progression of some of older girls into the senior club has meant that numbers have fallen. The money from Warburtons will now provide the club with a safety net while they try to get the donation ‘sportsmatched’ with another £1,000 from Sport England.
And the girls have responded by making their very own donation. They raised over two hundred pounds for Children in Need though a sponsored ‘Throw and Catch’ event. Pudsey dropped into the club last Friday to pick up the money.
Over 300 ladies travelled to The Velodrome in East Manchester on Saturday 7th August to take part part in the Dominoes Netball club 3rd annual netball tournament.
Teams from as far away as the Isle of Man, Scotland, London, Carlisle and Lincoln battled it out under the scorching sun, (temperatures reaching to the 80's!) in a bid to win the premier prize of winner's trophy and prize money. The tournament was the Club's biggest yet, 39 teams took part and played continually from 11am through to 4pm.
Club coach Lona Williams said 'We've had great feedback from the day, teams came from near and far and all thoroughly enjoyed the event. It's all down to thorough planning and great teamwork from the club members'. And not only did the winning team receive the ir winning prize money and trophy but they also got to meet a local celebrity too! Coronation Street's Friendly Cab driver Trevor Dywer-Lynch who plays Patrick handed out the winning trophies ... sealed with a cheeky kiss! .
The day was supported by local and national companies including Nivea, Warburtons, Redhead clothing , EAS nutrition and Netball UK to name a few. Plans are already afoot for tournament number 4!!! She was nominated for the Sports Category, by her fellow team mate and junior club coach Yvonne Coldrick. Ms Coldrick felt that Lona makes an outstanding contribution to the sport of netball. And she also maintains the clubs website www.dominoes-netball.co.uk that caters for the seniors & junior netballers.Lona’s current task is overseeing the clubs annual tournament this year to be held on the 7th August at the Manchester Velodrome.
